Ilya Lichtenstein, who pled responsible to cash laundering expenses tied to his position within the large hack of crypto trade Bitfinex, has apparently been launched early from jail.

In a Thursday night put up on X, Lichtenstein stated he was out early “due to President Trump’s First Step Act” (a jail reform invoice handed throughout Trump’s first time period).

“I stay dedicated to creating a optimistic influence in cybersecurity as quickly as I can,” Lichtenstein stated. “To the supporters, thanks for every little thing. To the haters, I stay up for proving you unsuitable.”

The Division of Justice arrested Lichtenstein and his spouse Heather Morgan in 2022 and seized $3.6 billion price of bitcoins that had been stolen from Bitfinex. The couple grew to become notorious after their arrest and had been featured in a Netflix documentary known as “Greatest Heist Ever.”

Lichtenstein finally admitted to his position within the hack and was sentenced to 5 years in jail.

It’s not clear whether or not the Trump administration performed a direct position within the launch. An administration official instructed CNBC that Lichtenstein “has served important time on his sentence and is at the moment on residence confinement according to statute and Bureau of Prisons insurance policies.”
